With Liverpool falling to a second consecutive 3-0 defeat, there was plenty for supporters to debate amid the fallout from an Anfield loss to Nottingham Forest.

While restraint and context are required when discussing the coach’s position at the football club, there is now room for reasonable debate on the topic.

The vast majority of supporters are unwilling to call for Slot’s head, but there are those who are rapidly losing faith due to the nature of Liverpool’s performances.

It isn’t just Liverpool’s historically poor run of eight defeats in 11 games that is causing concern, though; it is the manner in which the same mistakes are repeatedly being made.

Slot proved last season that he is a good coach, capable of positively affecting games from the sidelines, but to turn this run of form around will be the toughest test of his young managerial career yet.

Dominik Szoboszlai playing at right-back

With Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong absent through injury, Slot turned to Liverpool’s most in-form midfielder, Szoboszlai, to fill in at right-back.

It is a position the Hungarian has now played five times this season and he wasn’t poor on Saturday. The same could be said of Curtis Joneswho linked well with Mo is wrong and Szoboszlai in the first half.

However, as has been said many times this season, Liverpool missed Szoboszlai in midfield when he isn’t there.

Joe Gomez would have been many supporters’ preferred choice to play at full-back, or even at centre-half instead of the error-prone Ibrahima Konatebut Slot explained after the match that the 28-year-old “hadn’t trained the whole week” and he didn’t “think he was fully ready to start.”

The only right-back by trade that could have been selected was Calvin Ramsay; he made the Premier League squad on Saturday for the first time since 2022.

The argument for playing a natural right-back at right-back is logical, but it is understandable why Slot didn’t throw him in having only played once this season in the Carabao Cup against Crystal Palace.

Since signing from NewcastleIsak has played 500 minutes and scored just one goal. That isn’t all his fault, however.

Against Forest, he had just 14 touches and one shot off target as he struggled to connect with his teammates while being closely marked by Murillo.

This ineffectiveness shouldn’t be news to Slot, who spoke on Friday about how he may have to play over other in-form players – that would be Hugo Ekitike – in order to gain match fitness.

Surely, though, it would have been wiser to start Ekitike against Forest and play Isak against PSV in the Champions Leaguebefore potentially starting the Swede again next weekend at West Ham?

With the team in poor form also, it doesn’t help the mood around the match when supporters have to queue up for 45 minutes only to miss kick-off.

This was arguably the biggest objective at the start of the season anyway, with Slot previously admitting he would pick the European Cup over the Premier League if forced to choose one.

As we all know, however, you can’t pick and choose as football isn’t played on paper. If the Reds are to stand any chance in Europe, they at least need to regain some momentum domestically.
