I Discovered A Parasite Eating Through My Eye… Here Are The Gruesome Symptoms To Be Wary Of
When Vivian Nosovitsky, originally from Miami, Floridamoved to a small Mexican beach town called Sayulita, life seemed perfect.
The 21-year-old lived just a stone’s throw away from the beach and spent her days soaking up the sun and swimming in the ocean.
But her entire life was turned upside down when what started as occasional eye pain became a horrific, weeks-long ordeal after she discovered that a parasite was eating her cornea.
The pain is still so intense that Nosovitsky can barely leave her home or sleep at night.
She has laid bare her gruesome health journey during an exclusive chat with the Daily Mail.
The ordeal began three weeks ago, when she woke up in the middle of the night with immense pain, redness and watering in her right eye.
‘I had no idea what was going on and thought it would go away in the morning… but it never did. I was never able to actually go back to sleep,’ she recalled.
In the morning, she also noticed that she had an ‘extreme sensitivity to light,’ as she added: ‘Even the slightest brightness was painful.’

But her entire life was turned upside when what started as some eye pain became a horrific weeks-long ordeal after she discovered that a parasite was eating her cornea
As days passed with no improvement or relief, she decided to seek medical help and went to a local clinic, where she was given some medicated eye drops.
But even those failed to help ease the pain and soon, her eye became ‘super swollen,’ her cornea started to turn gray and she began to lose vision in the eye.
She ultimately had to travel hours to a hospital that was equipped to help her. Finally, she received a corneal scraping and learned that she had acanthamoeba keratitis (AK), a rare infection caused by a parasite in the eye.
‘Doctors told me it was an extremely serious and urgent matter and that I need to be put on a strict treatment or I could lose my eye,’ Nosovitsky explained. ‘This is incredibly serious and dangerous.’
She admitted that she’s still not 100 percent sure how she got it, but theorized that it came from her ‘not taking proper care of her contacts.’
According to My Cleveland Clinic’contact lens wearers make up at least 90 percent of AK cases’ and it’s usually caused by ‘wearing contacts too long, improperly storing them, incorrectly cleaning them and wearing them when swimming or showering,’ the latter of which Nosovitsky said she did often.
She is now on a ‘strict treatment’ plan involving ‘hourly eye drops even during the night.’ But she’s still in constant, unbearable pain.

‘It’s the most painful thing I’ve ever experienced in my life. It feels like glass and knives cutting your eye, and then add extreme throbbing on to that,’ she shared.
‘Hopefully, following the treatment, it will improve, but there is a chance I might need a corneal transplant surgery to recover my vision. Doctors don’t know how long it will take.’
Due to the sensitivity to sunlight, Nosovitsky said she is unable to leave the house much and struggles to sleep at night because of the discomfort.
‘It’s affected me mentally than I thought it would – not being able to do the things I love and having to lay in darkness for three weeks now,’ she said.
‘The dark thoughts definitely start to creep in. I honestly just want this to be over, it’s been extremely frustrating having to sit with this pain.’

where many of her videos have gone viral.
‘It’s really important for me to show up as vulnerably and open as possible online, especially nowadays, where almost everything you see is so fake and edited,’ she said of her decision to open up about it online.
‘I didn’t expect it to get the reaction that it did, but I definitely had a feeling that it would gain a lot of visibility as something like this is extremely vulnerable and not common.’
In the end, she hopes that by being so open about it, she can help others avoid going through something similar.
‘Be grateful for what you have… and be aware of how you’re taking care of yourself, especially with contacts,’ she urged.
