Joe Navarro, a former FBI spy catcher and body language expert, has revealed what exactly your tone of voice conveys – and how it can change the outcome of every interaction.

recently shared on YouTubeNavarro revealed that the way our voices adapt to different situations enhances communication.

‘It certainly is something that you can apply to your toolbox,’ the author of What Every Body Is Saying: An Ex-FBI Agent’s Guide to Speed-Reading People suggested.

‘We all have a quiver of arrows of important things that we can use weapons when we need them, and the use of voice is certainly important,’ he said.

According to Navarro, the voice you use to influence is not the voice you use to impress, dominate or defend yourself.

‘Subtle changes in tone, pace, volume, and timing can determine whether others trust you, resist you, or follow your lead.

‘Tone of voice is important for de-escalating dangerous situations, building trust in emergencies, and even signaling danger or comfort,’ he shared.

The expert said this is particularly important for leaders who are required to speak publicly, as it can dictate how what they say is understood by who they are talking to.

Navarro listed some examples of different tones of voice and what they are portraying.

‘We have assertive voices (when)we need to change how we areperceived,’ he said.

‘But most of the voices that we’re talking about, they’re quite common. We have the voice that we use when we’re talking to a baby,’ he pointed out.

He explained that our voices match fear indangerous situations, and if you are leading a group of people in a precarious situation, it is particularly important to stay measured.

He reflected on his own experiences of being in a leadership position.

‘When I was a SWAT team commander in Tampa, your decisiveness, your competence, your confidence has to come through that voice,’ he said.

‘On the SWAT team, all the operators had the same uniform, but it was that voice that carried over and succeeded in influencing others.’

He spoke of the importance of cadence, saying: ‘It allows you to marry up words with emotions and that becomes powerful.’
